Seven must-reads for summer 2019

In need of hours of thought provoking entertainment? I reckon I've sorted it for you.
Here they are in order of greatness. Three of them are fiction - IKR!!! Fabulous, entertaining, life enhancing, educating in history, emotion and philosophy type fiction though. So,

At joint number one (fiction award)
The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber.

Powerful, shocking, no-holds barred depiction of Victorian England. Ir's what Dickens should have written. An excellent listen.

At joint number one (non-fiction award)
Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari

A great, energetically written philosophical tour of pre human history, human history and some bets on the future. A great great first half, and a good second half.

At number three (fiction) BY THE SAME AUTHOR AS THE WINNER
Under the Skin by Michel Faber

I listened to this on audible and gradually worked out what was going on This novel is a mind blowing metaphor at heart.

At joint number three (non-fiction)
The Sixth Extinction by Elizabeth Kolbert

This makes me give up on saving the planet. We've done so much to it - and Elizabeth Kolbert outlines, in journalistic first person investigator style, exactly how and with what impact. OR...what the Earth has allowed one of its creations to do.

At number five - FICTION AGAIN
Tipping the Velvet -Sarah Waters

Victorian England again! Brilliantly done again! Sex again! Dickens could never have written this I feel. Unblinking, fast paced...you'll thank me.

At number six - (look I'm certain the top 5 will entertain everybody. The next two are more niche and you never know so here they are):
Inside Story by Phillip Webster

If you like hearing about the power of the press, the lobby, the relationship between the Kuenssbergs and the politicians, their codes, their ways...this book is for you. It's well written, a real inside story and a great listen.

At number seven
The Anglo Saxon World by Professor Michael Drout

I don't think this is a book. It's a lecture series on Audible. If you're interested in history and you want your assumptions about the Anglo Saxons blasted apart - have a listen to this exuberant enthusiast.
